Abstract

This article provides a comparative analysis of the Piano and Wind Quintets by Mozart (K. 452) and Beethoven (Op. 16), emphasizing the E-flat major key’s role in favoring the natural horn’s harmonic series. The study explores the instrument’s function as a structural "architect" and timbral bridge between the piano and woodwinds. By examining the transition from Mozart’s "galant" balance to Beethoven’s dramatic virtuosity, the article highlights the horn's evolution from a hunting signal instrument to a sophisticated chamber voice. Furthermore, it addresses the practical innovation required for modern hornists to recapture historical expressiveness while using contemporary valve technology.
